The five Sullivan Brothers - Joseph, Francis, Albert, Madison, and George from Waterloo, Iowa, insisted on serving together in the US Navy after the death of a boyhood friend during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Assigned to the light cruiser USS Juneau, four were killed when the ship sank after being hit by a Japanese torpedo. The fifth brother died from a shark attack off the waters of Guadalcanal. Awarded Purple Hearts posthumously, the US Navy also named a destroyer USS The Sullivans.
Shown here is a Commemorative Cover in the form of a Proof Card, bearing the postmark of November 13, 1993, the anniversary of the sinking of the USS Juneau in the battle for Guadalcanal November 13, 1942, from Waterloo, Iowa. On a Commemorative Cover, the stamp serves the purpose of supplying postage, for without it, the post office would not furnish a cancellation. The two stamps used are the US Flag Stamp and the 1945 stamp honoring the US Navy at the end of WWII.
