In 1999 the USPS issued a set of 15 stamps to commemorate people and events of the 1950's. This set was part of a bigger set of 150 stamps (15 for each decade) called Celebrate the Century. An elaborate voting process determined which stamps would be issued. Rock 'n Roll, spearheaded by the appearance of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show, became the music of a new generation. Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Billl Haley, Buddy Holly and others fueled the fire making Rock 'n Roll one of the top 15 events of the 1950's.
Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the Rock 'n Roll stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Springfield, Mass) on the first day of issue (May 26, 1999.) Collectible, historic, unaddressed, this cover is a great addition to any collector of Rock & Roll memorabilia.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) is printed on silk and surrounded by gold embossing. Because this cover is part of a series of 150, many companies did not produce individual artwork for all 150 stamps. This company did. In addition they printed a card giving a brief history of this event which we have included.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
