A Postal Tribute to Knute Rockne........

On March 9, 1988, the USPS issued a stamp to honor legendary football coach Knute Rockne, the first football coach to receive a U.S. stamp. In fact, to date, there are two college coaches to have U.S. stamps (the other being Bear Bryant) and two professional football coaches to have U.S. stamps (George Halas and Vince Lombardi.)

Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp, depicting Knute Rockne - football in hands with the field and goal post behind him, cancelled from the city of issue (Notre Dame, Indiana) on the first day of issue captioned above.  Note the special "football" postmark designed expressly to cancel this stamp on its 'birthday.'

The sepia-toned cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Rockne set against a backdrop of him coaching his Notre Dame players.  This is one of those covers that is becomming increasingly difficult to find.  Score a winning touchdown with this postal and football piece of memorabilia collected by someone in 1988, and now ready to enjoy a prominent place in your home or office.

Double matted in green and white (what else!), it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
