On July 19, 1996, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Modern Olympics, held in Athens in 1896, and 100 years later in Atlanta, Georgia. There was also a set of twenty stamps issued to celebrate 20 different Olympic Sports for these Games issued from Washington DC, but this stamp commemorates the Olympic Centennial and is cancelled from Atlanta. Shown here is an envelope cancelled from the city of issue (Atlanta, GA) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the special cancellation created to cancel this stamp on its "birthday."
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features the lighting of the Olympic Torch at the Altar of Hera in ancient Greece. Historic, collectible, this is a great piece of Olympic Memorabilia, especially of the Centennial Games.
Double matted in green & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
