William
Wordsworth.....
On June 3, 1970, the Royal Mail
of Great Britain issued a stamp to honor poet William Wordsworth on the
bi-centenary of his birth. Shown
here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the
stamp depicting Grasmere,
a village in central Cumbria. Wordsworth lived in Dove Cottage in the
hamlet of Townend on the outskirts of Grasmere. The stamp is
cancelled from the city of
issue (Harrow and Wembly) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The color cachet depicts a
portrait of Wordsworth with Westminster and the Westminster Bridge. A
line from his poem Upon Westminster Bridge reads, "Dull would he be of
soul who could pass by - A sight so touching in its majesty..."
Historic, collectible,
it's double matted in blue & white and
will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate
of Authenticity Included***
