William Orlando Darby is credited with being the leader of the first American commando outfit, called "the Rangers." Darby's Rangers were patterned after and trained by British Commandoes and distinguised themselves in Africa and Italy during WWII. Shown here is a Commemorative Cover in the form of a Proof Card, bearing the postmark of February 8 - Darby's birthday, and Ft. Smith, AR - his place of birth. On a Commemorative Cover, the stamp serves the purpose of supplying postage, for without it, the post office would not furnish a cancellation. The two stamps used are a US Flag stamp and the 3 cents US Army stamp issued in 1945.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Darby, a battle scene, and the Ranger insignia. Also included is a short commentary of Darby's career. Historic, collectible, this is one of several pieces of WWII and US Army Postal Memorabilia offered by Wall Art Collectibles.
Matted in military green, this is matted to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity and Commentary Included***
