On February 11, 1999, the USPS issued an imprinted postcard with the imprint or "stamp" commemorating the 250th Anniversary of Washington & Lee University located in Lexington, Virginia. Following the death of University President Robert E. Lee, the university changed its name from Washington Academy (so named to honor George Washington who saved the school from closing by bequeathing 100 shares of stock) to Washington & Lee - thereby honoring two great men. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, in this case a postcard with the imprint or "stamp" cancelled from the city of issue (Lexington, VA) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) depicts the university's Colonnade. The producer of this cover has also included a brief history of the university on the back; we have included a copy for you.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY INCLUDED***
