On August 17, 1992, the USPS issued a set of ten stamps commemorating the 50th Anniversary of ten different events of 1942 during WWII. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp honoring Codebreaking, which turned the tide in the Pacific, and Col. William Friedman, who cracked the Japanese Code, cancelled from the city of issue (Indianapolis, IN) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Col. Friedman superimposed over a map of the Pacific as well as a photo of him in WWII. The Japanese counterpart to 'Enigma' was 'Purple', a system which functioned on the fundamentals of a telephone switchboard. Col. Friedman, the War Department's chief cryptanalyst deciphered the code in 'Operation Magic', the American deciphering program, leading to an allied victory on Midway. The company that produced this cover has also written a brief commentary about Codebreaking, which we've included. Collectible, historic, this is a great piece of WWII - Pacific Theater memorabilia.
Double matted in blue and white, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
