On September 23, 2003, the USPS issued a diamond-shaped stamp commemorating the District of Columbia. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the full-color stamp, depicting a map and several well-known landmarks from the Nation's Capital, cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue captioned above. The addition of three older satmps, which were added to the envelope and then cancelled along with the new one on its 'birthday' make this a Combo - an extra special First Day Cover. The older stamps commemorate the Jefferson Memorial (1973), the Supreme Court (1950), and the Smithsonian 1946.)
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post office) features large open-letters spelling out 'Washington DC' with more well-known landmarks, such as the Iwo Jima Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the White House. It's printed on silk, the luminosity bringing a vibrancy to the colors, making the picture look almost three-dimensional.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
