On August 10, 1946, the USPS issued a stamp commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Smithsonian Institution, founded by James Smithson.  Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp depicting the 'Castle', cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue captioned above.

The  cachet (artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post office) again features a drawing of the 'Castle', designed by noted architect James Renwick, Jr., in the Norman Style - a 12th C. combination of late Romanesque and early Gothic motifs.

Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
