The USPS honored Walt Whitman with a stamp in 1940. In 1989 a company decided to produce a Commemorative Cover to celebrate this stamp. In this case, the postal cancellation "freezes" the day Whitman was born (May 31) and the city in which he died in 1892 (Camden, N.J.) The only reason the flag stamp is on the envelope is that the USPS will not cancel unless there is current postage.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features the an original Whitman stamp issued 2/20/40 in mint condition (uncancelled and unaffixed.)
If you're a Whitman fan and your copy of Leaves of Grass is dog-eared, this is for you! Collectible, historic, it's a real conversation piece for your wall.
Matted in green, we've sized this to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***A Short Bio of Whitman is Included ***
