On August 8, 2003, the USPS issued a set of four stamps called Early Football Heroes, honoring Ernie Nevers, Bronko Nagurski, Red Grange, and Walter Camp. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp for 'The Father of American Football' Walter Camp cancelled from the city of issue (South Bend, IN) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the special postmark created for the cancellation of this set of stamps on their 'birthday.'
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Camp, a small full length portrait in uniform, and his signature. Former Yale University halfback, Camp went on to eventually coach the Yale Football team, leading it to a record 67 games won and only 2 lost. The producer of this cover has also written a short commentary about Camp, which we've included; find out how Camp revolutionized the game of American Football.
Double matted in blue and white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
