On January 10, 2006, the USPS and Great Britain each issued a set of eight stamps commemorating Favorite Children's Book Animal Characters. Of the eight stamps, two were issued jointly...The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Maisy the Mouse. Shown here is a Joint Issue/Dual Cancellation First Day Cover showing the two stamps - one for The Very Hungry Caterpillar and the other for Maisy the Mouse. The two U.S. stamps are cancelled from Findlay, Ohio, while the two British stamps are cancelled from Mousehole, Penzance, Cornwall. Note the two distinctive postmarks created to cancel the stamps on the first day - an open book for the U.S. and a Mouse for Great Britain. When two countries issue stamps jointly, there is usually a grace period so that both countries can 'swap' covers and have the same date applied. Look closely at the British stamp for the Very Hungry Caterpillar...there are two holes of different sizes in the stamp replicating the holes in the pages of the book!
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a mother reading to her child. The picture is printed on silk, the luster making the colors 'pop' and look three-dimensional. If you love children's books, if these two characters have entertained you in your childhood, if your child finds these characters irresistible...then what a delight it would be to have this unique collector's piece of children's literature memorabilia grace your wall.
Double matted in green and white, it will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included ***
