In 1985, the company Fleetwood (the largest cachetmaker in the world) produced a series of Commemorative Covers called Epic Events in American History featuring the artwork of noted artist, Mort Kunstler. Shown here is the cover marking the connecting of the tracks by the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific at Promontory Point, Utah with a Golden Spike.

A Commemorative Cover is not about the stamp...it's about the cancellation which freezes a place and a time that an event occurred.  The nation's first transcontinental railroad was born on May 10, 1869, hence the day, May 10.  Promontory Point is near Ogden, Utah, hence the Ogden Post Office cancelled  the flag stamp showing current postage for 1985.

The detail of Kunstler's art is legendary.  The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) captures the pride of a young nation as President Leland Stanford of the Central Pacific joins the tracks with the Golden Spike.

Matted in blue, this piece will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***A short commentary of this event is included***
