On October 18, 1995, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Naval Academy. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Annapolis, Md.) on the first day of issue captioned above. The addition of a 1937 stamp honoring Farragut and Porter, which was added to the envelope uncancelled and then cancelled on the first day of issue of the Naval Academy stamp, makes this a Combo.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a full-color portrait of David D. Porter, whose brilliant naval support paved the way for Grant's success at Vicksburg. In the blurb provided read about his promotion, one of the most unusual in U.S. naval history! This cover celebrates Porter's distinguished career and is a great piece of naval memorabilia.
Double matted in blue & white, we've sized this piece to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity included plus a short bio of Porter***
