USS Holland - America's First Submarine.....

On March 27, 2000, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the USS Holland (SS-1), America's First submarine.  Purchased by the US Navy on April 11, 1900, the Holland VI - so called because it was the sixth submarine designed by John Phillip Holland, known as "Father of the Modern Submarine.  Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp, cancelled from the city of issue (Groton, Ct.) on the first day of issue captioned above. This stamp was one of five in a prestige booklet pane issued to celebrate the Centennial of the U.S. Navy Submarine Force.

The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features an underwater view of the USS Holland plus a cut-away view. It's printed on silk surrounded by a gold-embossed border.

Double matted in blue & white, we've sized this piece to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
