Audie Murphy.... On May 3, 2000, the USPS issued a set of four stamps to honor Distinguished American Soldiers. One of these was Second Lieutenant Audie L. Murphy, recipient of the Medal of Honor - the highest US military decoration. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover,
an envelope with the new stamp (showing a close-up photo of Murphy with
the blue and white striped insignia of the 3rd Infantry Division)
cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The cachet
(artwork on the envelope) features a photo of Murphy with the follow
caption below, "Audie Murphy was awarded the Congressional Medal of
Honor for helping his unit survive a heavy attack in France.
Interestingly, Murphy's grave in Arlington National Cemetery
is the second most-visited site, surpassed only by President John F.
Kennedy's burial plot. This piece of collectible, historic postal stamp
art celebrating the men & women of the military is one of many
offered by Postal Stamp Art. Also included is a short commentary about Murphy which is printed on the back of the envelope. We have copied it off for you.
Double matted in military green & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
