US Air Force....

On August 1, 1957, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Air Force. This 50 year anniversary takes the Air Force from its inception as part of the Army Air Corps to 1947, when it became an independent service branch. Shown here is a First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue captioned above.

The black & white cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows a 'cloud background' with a B-52 and a modern fighter plane.  At the bottom is a small picture of the U.S. Army Plane No. 1 - 1910.  The text reads,  "Started on August 1, 1907 as the Aeronautical Division of the Signal Corps U.S. Amy...The Air Force was established under Armed Services Unification Act of July 26, 1947."  Be sure to check out the other 50th Anniversary Air Force First Day Cover, issued in 1997, and celebrating the 1st 50 years of the USAF as an independent service branch. You'll find it in this category.

Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY INCLUDED***
