On December 15, 1981,the USPS issued several more stamps in their ongoing transportation series. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp commemorating the Mail Wagon, cancelled from the city of issue (Shreveport, LA) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows a horse-drawn Mail Wagon making its way to a riverboat laden with mail. The producer of this cover has also written a brief commentary about the significance of the mail wagon in the latter half of the 19th century, when, in 1863, FREE mail delivery became available to many homes and businesses. If you're wondering why you've probably never seen this stamp, it's because it was intended primarily for major retailers, only large coils of five hundred or three thousand were issued!
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
