Taking Okinawa......
Marine Corps photographers took this picture of a combat-weary Marine PFC relaxing after twelve days of uninterrupted front-line fighting on Okinawa. It's joined by a Commemorative Cover featuring the Marine Corps Reserve -50th Anniversary Stamp cancelled from Washington DC on September 2, 1980, to officially commemorate the 35th anniversary of the formal surrender of Japan at the end of the war in the Pacific. Added to the cover (envelope) are two uncancelled stamps - a 1995 stamp commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Okinawa and the 2004 stamp celebrating the dedication of the WWII Memorial in Washington DC. Also included is a brief commentary on the Taking of Okinawa.
