On July 11, 1945, the USPS issued a stamp, depicting the US Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima, to honor the US Marines at the end of WWII. The city of issue was Washington DC.

Shown here is a Commemorative Cover celebrating the 33rd Anniversary of the issue of the 1945 Iwo Jima Stamp described above.  The artwork ("Hometown Hero") is by Norman Rockwell, and served as the October 13, 1945 cover for the Saturday Evening Post.  A young Marine seems at a loss with how to adapt to his new-found hero status as he clutches a Japanese flag.

Accompanying this cover is a detailed commentary about the inspiration for this painting as well as the stamp honoring the US Marines for their contribution to the WWII Allied victory.  You'll find out who modeled for the Marine, where the setting for the painting was taken, and the two Rockwell family members that are in this picture.

Matted in blue, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame.  ***Commentary Included***
