On July 30, 1999, the USPS issued a stamp to honor William "Billy" Mitchell, one of the most controversial military aviation figures ever to wear the uniform. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Milwaukee, WI - near Mitchell's hometown of West Allis) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The color cachet (artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post office) features a portrait of Mitchell, his plane from WWI, and the Ostfriesland, a German ship that Mitchell bombed, proving that a plane could take out a ship, thereby reinforcing his belief in an Air Force. The producer of this cover has also written a brief commentary about Mitchell, which we've included.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
