Chuck Yeager - USAF Pilot.... In
the early 90's the company of Fleetwood produced several Commemorative
Covers in the form of Proof Cards to honor US military heroes both past
and present. Shown here is the Proof Card (printed on heavy cardstock with the picture or 'cachet' surround by an embossed border) for Charles E. 'Chuck' Yeager.
The two stamps making up current postage are cancelled on the day and
place of the anniversary of his birth...February 13, 1993 from Myra, WV.
On a commemorative cover the stamps merely provide postage...it's the
cancellation that 'freezes' a particular date and place.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the card) features a handsome portrait of Yeager with the Bell X-1 plane,
in which he was the first to break the sound barrier, in the
background. At the bottom are various insignias of his accomplishments,
which include the Mackay Trophy and Collier Trophy, the Harmon Air
Trophy, the commandant of the Aerospace Research Pilot School and
commander of the Fourth Tactical Fighter Wing as well as the rank of
brigadier general. Matted in blue, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included*** Note: See our other two pieces of postal stamp art for Chuck Yeager - just enter 'Yeager' in the search box.
