The Love of Locomotives.... On July 28, the USPS issued five stamps to commemorate the "Iron Horses of the Later 19th Century." Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover in the form of an envelope, with the stamp for Ely's No. 10, cancelled from the city of issue (Baltimore, MD) on the first day of issue
captioned above. The addition of three older stamps, which were added
to the envelope and then cancelled along with the Ely's No. 10 stamp,
elevates this 1st Day Cover to a Combo. The three older stamps begin with the 3-cents 1950 stamps honoring railroad engineers and depicting a picture of Casey Jones,
Illinois Central Engine No. 382 as well as a diesel locomotive. The
22-cents stamp to its right commemorates the 1831 Steam Engine John Bull and was issued in 1987. Below the Ely's No. 10 stamp is the 29-cents toy train stamp, issued in 1992.
The cachet
(artwork on the envelope) features an illustration of an toy engine and
coal car. The green strip displays the logos for various railroads
....Frisco Lines, South Shore Line, Reading Lines, Western Pacific,
Cotton Belt Route, LIRR, The Flying Crow, North Western, The Peoria
Road, NY Central System, and New Jersey Central. The caption reads, "The Love of Locomotives
- From a child's 1880 cast iron toy to our current fascination."
Historical, collectible, what a great gift for the train lover in your
life!
