The Blackboard Print Winslow Homer Public Education Stamp.... American artist and illustrator Winslow Homer is best know for his paintings of marine subjects. However, he also devoted special attention to everyday life, education being one of his favorite topics. This print of the Blackboard is from an original watercolor now displayed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. For a long time, the geometric figures on the blackboard were a mystery. They have been found to be from a method of drawing instruction popular in American schools in the 1870's. Homer felt his watercolors to be his best work, as evidenced by his saying, "You will see, in the future I will live by my watercolors."
We've paired this print with an uncancelled, collectible Public Education stamp issued October 1, 1985, depicting a quill pen in holder, an apple, reading glasses, and a paper showing the practice of penmanship. It's matted in blue and sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame.
