Theodore Roosevelt 's Rough Riders.....
On October 27, 1948, the USPS issued a
stamp to commemorate the 50th
anniversary of the organization of the Rough Riders
during the Spanish-American War. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope
with four of the new stamps depicting a statue of
William Owen "Bucky" O'Neill, cancelled from
the city of issue (Prescott, Arizona) on the first day of
issue captioned above.
The cachet (artwork on
the envelope) features a drawing of the Capt. William Owen "Bucky" O'Neill Statue in
Prescott, Arizona as well as the 1st US Cavalry taking San Juan Hill and
an inset with a photo of "Bucky O'Neill." The 1st U.S. Cavalry and 2nd
Volunteer Cavalry were made up of western ranchmen, commanded by
Leonard Wood and Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt and noted for the famous
charge and capture of San Juan Hill, Cuba, July 1, 1898. A handsome
cover in great condition, with the exception of a faint address in
pencil that's been erased out, this makes a worthwhile addition to one's
Rough Rider collection.
The cover is joined by a photo print, circa
1898, of 'Teddy' Roosevelt in uniform astride a horse. The original
hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, part of the Smithsonian
Institution, in Washington DC. Matted in military green, with the print double matted in green and white, it's sized to fit a
standard 11x14 frame. ***Certificate of
Authenticity included***
