Theodore Roosevelt 's Rough Riders.....
On October 27, 1948, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the organization of the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with four of the new stamps depicting a staute of William Owen "Bucky" O'Neill, cancelled from the city of issue (Prescott, Arizona) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a drawing of Col. Theodore Roosevelt and his 1st Regiment of the U.S. Calvary (Rough Riders). Made up of cowboys and sons of first families, it was noted for the famous charge and capture of San Juan Hill, Cuba, July 1, 1898. A handsome cover in great condition, this makes a worthwhile addition to one's Rough Rider collection.
The cover is joined by a photo print, circa 1898, of 'Teddy' Roosevelt in uniform astride a horse. The original hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, part of the Smithsonian Institution, in Washington DC. Matted in blue, with the print double matted in blue and white, it's sized to fit a standard 11x14 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity included***
