Benjamin Banneker....
On February 15, 1980, the USPS issued a stamp to honor the surveyor of the Nation's Capitol site in 1791, Benjamin Banneker. Shown here is a genuine 1st Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Annapolis, MD) on the first day of issue captioned above. The full-color stamp depicts a portrait of Banneker as well as a smaller full-length view of him holding plans, and his surveying equipment.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows a beautiful portrait of Banneker with his surveying eqipment. A true Renaissance man, Banneker, a free black, possessed a keen mind and was a noted astronomer, clockmaker, and mathematician. He was a friend a friend of Thomas Jefferson's and accompanied him on one of his trips to France. The cachet is printed on silk, the luster lending an-almost three-dimensional quality to the picture.
Double matted in green & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY INCLUDED***
