On May 26, 1999, the USPS issued a set of fifteen stamps chosen to commemorate people and events representing the decade of the 1950's. One of these events was the hometown rivalry between the Brooklyn Dodgers, the New York Giants, and the New York Yankees. Dubbed The Subway Series, the Giants vied for the World Series twice, the Dodgers five times, and the Yankees nine times during the period from 1949 to 1958. The highlight for the Dodger fans came in in 1955 when they finally beat the Yankees. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Springfield, Mass.) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) is printed on silk surrounded by gold embossing. This is a historic, collectible piece of memorabilia commemorating a bygone era when baseball belonged to New York. Also included is a short history of the event.
Double matted in blue & white, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
