On August 20, 2005, the USPS issued a five-stamp series to commemorate Five Sporty Cars from the 1950's....the 1952 Nash Healey, the 1954 Kaiser Darrin, the 1953 Studebaker Starliner, the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette, and the 1955 Ford Thunderbird. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover for the Chevrolet Corvette, an envelope with the stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Detroit, MI) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the special postmark created for the cancelltion of the stamps on first day covers.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette, designed by Harley Earl, known as "the Father of the Corvette," and named for a WWII Royal Navy warship. The two-seat convertible in polo white with red interior and a black canvas top sold at a base price of $3,498.00...only 300 built in 1953. The producer of this cover has written a short commentary about this American automotive icon, which still captures hearts today.
