On August 20, 2005, the USPS issued a five-stamp series to commemorate Five Sporty Cars from the 1950's....the 1952 Nash Healey, the 1954 Kaiser Darrin, the 1953 Studebaker Starliner, the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette, and the 1955 Ford Thunderbird. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover for the Studebaker Starliner, an envelope with the stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Detroit, MI) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the special postmark created for the cancelltion of the stamps on first day covers.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features the 1953 Studebaker Starliner, a pillarless hardtop coupe praised for being "the most beautiful American production automobile of all time" at the Museum of Modern Art's 'Ten Automobiles' exhibit in 1953. The producer of this cover has written a short commentary about this prestigious automobile and the Studebaker Brothers Mfg. Company founded in 1868 that became the largest wagon manufacturer in America, its sturdy Conestogas carrying pioneers westward....we've included a copy for you.
