On June 13, 2003, the USPS issued a set of five stamps celebrating US SOUTHEASTERN LIGHTHOUSES, beginning in Virginia and ending in Florida....Old Cape Henry, Cape Lookout, Morris Island, Tybee Island, and Hillsboro Inlet. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover for Hillsboro Inlet in Florida cancelled from the city of issue (Tybee Island, GA) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the special postmark used to cancel this set of stamps on the first day.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows the skeletal lighthouse on Pompano Beach which serves to define the Florida coast between Jupiter and Miami. This type of construction became popular because pre-fabricated sections could be constructed quickly, at low costs, and then shipped to where they would be erected...this lighthouse was constructed in Detroit and its lantern room and cupola even made an appearance at the 1904 St. Louis Exposition. The producer of this cover has written a short commentary of the history of this lighthouse...a copy has been made for you.
Double matted in blue and white, this item is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
