On May 26, 1999, the USPS issued a set of fifteen stamps chosen to commemorate people and events representing the decade of the 1950's. One of these events was the homerun hit by Bobby Thompson in the National League playoffs in 1951 between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the NY Giants. Known as "The Shot Heard 'Round the World", many believe this homerun is the most famous in baseball history. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Springfield, Mass.) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) is printed on silk surrounded by gold embossing. This is a historic, collectible piece of memorabilia commemorating one of the most famous events in baseball history. Also included is a short history of the event.
Double matted in black & white, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
