On August 15, 1957, the USPS issued a stamp commemorating the 300th anniversary of the Popham Colony in Maine and Shipbuilding. What, you might ask, is the Popham Colony and why should it get a stamp? Well, it just so happens that a band of people from England settled in the area around Bath, Maine, first to farm (that didn't work out so well) and then to build ships. In 1607, that's right, 1607, they built the Virginia...the first ship built in America. And, yes, they preceded Jamestown! Bath, Maine has been the home to shipbuilding up to the present. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Bath, Maine) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a drawing of the building of the Virginia. Great art, unaddressed, this cover is a collectible, historic piece of sailing and shipbuilding memorabilia.
Double matted in green & white, this piece will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included ***
