Triton's Trumpet.....
On June 11, 1985, the Republic of Palau issued
a stamp to commemorate one of the most beautiful shells in the world -
the Triton's Trumpet. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Koror, Palau) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The full-color cachet (artwork
on the envelope) shows this spectacular gastropod or marine snail,
moving along the ocean's floor feedinf on sea urchins. It plays an
important role in the reef community by being an active predator of
destructive, coral-eating sea stars.
