In 1991 Great Britain issued a set of four stamps called Scientific Achievements. It commemorated the 200th anniversaries of the births of Michael Faraday, inventor of the electric motor and electric generator as well as defining the laws that link chemistry and electricty, and, Charles Babbage inventor of the Analylytical Engine, forerunner of the modern computer. This same year celebrated the 50th anniversary of Frank Whittle's jet engine.  Included with this set of four scientists is Robert Watson Watt, whose timely discovery of Radar contributed greatly to the Allied victory in WWII.

Shown here is a combination Collector Panel-First Day Cover with all four stamps cancelled from the city of issue (South Kensington, London) on the first day of issue March 5, 1991. As a tribute, the Royal Post has created a special postmark for the first day cancellation of these stamps.

In order to emphasize the importance of radar, the artist, Angelo Frasci, has chosen to portray an Air Traffic Controller perched high above the air field at his radar screen. The artist's signature is printed in embossed gold.

This Collector Panel-First Day Cover has all the bells and whistles:  A first day cover with the complete series of stamps, great commissioned artwork, an interesting postmark created just for first day cancellation, comes with a brief commentary about these important scientists and their discoveries, and, a limited edition piece (3358/9500.)

Matted in blue and sized to fit a standard size 11 X 14 frame, it is a great piece of collectible aviation/scientific history, and it's the only one we have. There are 2 other prints in our store that tie in... Winston Churchill, and  RAF Spitfire.   ***Certificate of Authentcity Included***
