On May 13, 1940, the USPS issued a stamp to honor Stephen Collins Foster, composer known for his songs of the American South. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Bardstown, KY) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The black & white cachet (artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post office) features Foster's portrait as well as the opening notes to "My Old Kentucky Home." This cover is addressed, as the majority were in the 40's; we've covered up the typewritten address with a 'First Day of Issue' sticker to make it more visually appealing. The brownish lines are actually shadows cast by the envelope on the scanner. This cover is a great piece of music, Kentucky, and postal memorabilia.
Double matted in green & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
