On September 14, 1989, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate Sitting Bull, legendary medicine man and leader of the Hunkpapa Sioux. He foretold the slaughter of Custer and his troops at the Battle of Little Bighorn, where, contrary to popular belief, Sitting Bull did not lead forces against Custer, but acted as the leading medicine man in preparation for the battle.
Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Rapid City, S.D.) on the first day of issue captioned above. In short, it's the 'birthday' of the stamp - a collectible, historic piece of postal and Native American memorabilia.
The First Day Cover is paired with a beatutiful full-color portrait of Sitting Bull. Matted in green it's sized to fit a standard 11 x 14 picture frame. ***CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY INCLUDED plus a short commentary about Sitting Bull***
