On April 14, 1978,the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the oldest original lighthouse existing in North America.....Sandy Hook Lighthouse built in 1764 by the British. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover,an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Atlantic City, NJ) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The black & white cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows Sandy Hook, the 102 ft.octagonal tower still in operation today. Sandy Hook was later commemorated on the 5-stamp series of Coastal Lighthouses issued in 1990.
