On February 9. 2005, the USPS issued an In Memoriam stamp to honor the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. Every President is honored with a stamp within a year of their death and usually on their birthday. Reagan is another exception. He did get his stamp within a year of his death, but his birthday was February 6th. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Simi Valley, CA.) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the special first day of issue cancellation featuring Reagan's signature.
OK...so now for the whipped cream and cherry on top of this first day cover: the addition of four older stamps (added to the envelope along with the new one and then cancelled with it on its first day of issue) make this a Combo. And, yes, that is a very special thing! The four older stamps are the Illinois Sesquicentennial stamp issued in 1968 (you do know that Reagan was the only U.S. President born in Illinois, don't you?); the 50th Anniversary of Motion Pictures issued in 1944; the California State Flag issued in 1976; and the tiny 4 1/2 cents White House stamp issued in 1938.
