In 1961 the race was on to break Babe Ruth's home run record. Ironically the two contestants were two New York Yankees, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. As the two jockeyed for dominance, fans held their breath and bets were wagered. On the final day of the season, October 1, 1961, the record held by Ruth since 1927 was finally broken...and the winner was...Roger Maris.
This black & white photo print of Maris & Mantle taken in 1961 is joined by three uncancelled, collectible stamps. On the left is the Centennial of Baseball issued in 1939; on the right the Centennial of Professional Baseball issued in 1969. In the middle is the U.S. stamp issued to honor Roger Maris. His stamp was one of fifteen selected to represent the decade of the 1960's. All fifteen stamps were issued September 17, 1999.
Matted in blue, it's sized to fit a standard 11 x 14 frame.
