On February 15, 1998, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the destruction of the battleship USS Maine in the Havana Harbor, prompting the outcry, "Remember the Maine." Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Key West, Fl.) on the first day of issue captioned above. The addition of four older stamps which were added to the envelope with the new one and then cancelled along with the new one on its "birthday" make this a Combo. The four older stamps are a Rough Riders stamp issued in 1948, a McKinley stamp issued in 1938, a Teddy Roosevelt stamp issued in 1955, and a stamp honoring Naval Officers Sampson, Dewey, and Schley issued in 1937.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a full-color depiction of the USS Maine being blown up. It's printed on silk and surrounded by gold embossing. Historic, collectible, this is a great piece of military memorabilia.
Double matted in dark green & white, this is matted to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
