On June 9, 1983, the USPS issued a stamp to honor the creator of Ragtime Music...Scott Joplin. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Sedalia, MO) on the first day of issue captioned above. Joplin lived a few years in Sedalia, in fact, graduated from high school there; today this town is home to the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Foundation which hosts the annual Scott Joplin Festival.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post office) depicts Joplin and a piano, the featured instrument of Ragtime. In hindsight one can see how Joplin created not only a bridge between the music of the past and the music to follow, but a totally new, truly- American style of music. The producer of this cover has written a commentary about Joplin and Ragtime, which we've included.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
