Richard Petty - No. 43.......
Shown here is a Postal Tribute in the form of a Souvenir Sheet of six different stamps from The Gambia honoring NASCAR Legend Richard Petty. Featured on the stamps are (from top left across): Petty's 1969 Ford, a portrait of Petty in his trademark hat and sunglasses, and Petty's 1978 Dodge Magnum STP. The second row shows Petty's 1987 Pontiac STP, Petty's 1989 Pontiac STP, and Petty's 1975 Dodge Daytona. The surrounding artwork features his number 43 and says: From the time he first stepped into a stock car in 1958 to his last race in 1992, Richard Petty was the class of stock car racing for 34 years. He won 200 of the 1,185 races he started, and finished in the top ten 694 times. Richard Petty is "The King" of stock car racing.
A Souvenir Sheet can be one stamp, or, in this case, many stamps with surrounding artwork. They are produced in limited numbers and are meant to be left intact and collected. Because the US does not put a living person on a stamp, many small countries will capitalize on this by honoring 'Living Legends.'
Matted in blue, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame.
