On May 30, 2003, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the Purple Heart Medal. Shown here is a First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Mt. Vernon, Va.) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note: Since President Washington originated this medal, it is only fitting that Mt. Vernon was chosen as the city of issue.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) is printed on silk and surrounded by gold embossing. The addition of five older stamps, which were put on with the new stamp and cancelled along with it, make this First Day Cover a COMBO. The company that produced this cover chose stamps commemorating the various service branches: Navy, Army, Marines, Coast Guard, and Air Force. The Air Force stamp was issued in 1957, the other four in 1945.
This is a rare First Day Cover, as well as being collectible and historic too! It's a great gift for any recipient of the Purple Heart, sure to be handed down to future generations since it celebrates a family's history.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY INCLUDED***
