The USPS honored poet, biographer, and folksinger, Carl Sandburg with a stamp in 1978. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Galesburg, Il.) on the first day of issue (January 6, 1978.)
The addition of four older stamps to this envelope which were cancelled along with the Sandburg stamp on its first day of issue, make this a Combo. In honor of Sandburg's biography of President Lincoln, the producer of this envelope chose two Lincoln stamps (3 cents stamp - 1959 and the 4 cents stamp - 1965), plus the Appomattox stamp - 1965, and the Union Soldiers stamp - 1949. Combos are the epitome of First Day Covers - this one, in particular, with the addition of the Lincoln stamps honors two great Americans.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features portraits of both Sandburg & Lincoln. Historic, collectible, it's matted in blue & white and will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included ***
