Philip MAZZEI Filippo Mazzei US-Italy 1st Day Cover..... On October 13, 1980, the USPS issued a 40-cents airmail stamp to honor Philip Mazzei
on the 250th Anniversary of his birth. Merchant, physician, friend of
Thomas Jefferson, Mazzei led a fascinating life. Shown here is a
genuine Dual Issue and Cancellation First Day Cover, with the US stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue
captioned above. The envelope was then sent to Italy to have the
Italian stamp, also issued for Mazzei's 250th Anniversary, cancelled
from the city of issue (Poggio a Caiano, Italy - Mazzei's city of birth) on Italy's first day of issue
(October 18, 1980.) Note the Italian postmark depicting Mazzei's
profile, created expressly to cancel this stamp on its 'birthday.'
The
black and white cachet features a portrait of Mazzei with the quote, "
'If we could have but one & the same Constitution for all the
United Colonies, our Union would be infinitely stronger...' May 11,
1776." There is also a facsimile of his signature.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
