PELICAN ISLAND Wildlife Refuge Postal Cover 4 Stamps.... Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the very first National Wildlife Refuge: Pelican Island, located in the Indian River Lagoon on the Atlantic coast of central Florida. The beautiful full-color Pelican stamp was cancelled on the first day (March 14, 2003) from the city of issue
(Sebastian, Fl.) Joining the 2003 stamp are three older stamps - first
added to the envelope uncancelled and then cancelled along with the new
Pelican Island stamp, making this first day cover a Combo.
The large 8-cents stamp issued in 1972 depicts a brown pelican on its
nest with three chicks. The 1998 stamp calling attention to preserving
wetlands on the lower left shows a cypress swamp and was issued for use
by non-profit organizations. On the lower right is a 6-cents 1955 stamp
honoring President Theodore Roosevelt, the 'Father of Conservation' who made Pelican Island the first National Wildlife Refuge.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a 'bird's eye view' of Pelican Island, the Atlantic ocean in the background. It's printed on silk, the luster lending an-almost three dimensional quality to the picture. This is a collectible, historic piece of postal and wildlife memorabilia.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
