Paul W. Tibbets, a master B-17 pilot in WWII leading the first American daylight raid on occupied Europe, transport pilot for General Mark Clark and General Eisenhower, and chosen to test flight the B29, he will always be remembered as the pilot for the Enola Gay, destined to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Shown here is a Commemorative Cover in the form of a Proof Card, bearing the postmark of February 23 - Tibbets' birthday, and Quincy, IL - his place of birth. On a Commemorative Cover, the stamp serves the purpose of supplying postage, for without it, the post office would not furnish a cancellation. The two stamps used are a US Flag stamp and the 6 cents airmail stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Air Force, from its inception as part of the Army Air Corps to 1947 when it became an independent service branch.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Tibbets, the Enola Gay, and the atomic bomb. Also included is a short commentary of Tibbets' career. Historic, collectible, this is one of several pieces of USAF and WWII Postal Memorabilia offered by Wall Art Collectibles.
Matted in blue, this is matted to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity and Commentary Included***
