On June 27, 2001, the USPS issued a set of ten stamps to commemorate Ten Classic Ballparks. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover for the Polo Grounds, home to the New York Giants, and, interestingly, the NY Yankees until 1922. The stamp of the Polo Grounds is cancelled from the city of issue (in this case New York, NY) on the first day of issue captioned above. Instead of the usual one city of issue selected for the vast majority of stamps, this set of ten stamps had FOUR....Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Boston. Obviously, the best cancellation one could have for the Polo Grounds is New York....and here it is!
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features the Polo Grounds which saw Bobby Thompson's 1951 homer, the "Shot Heard Round the World." The producer of this cover has also written an interesting commentary of Forbes; we've included a copy.
Double matted in green and white, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
